Amsterdam Travel Guide: Canals, Cycling, Coffee Shops & What Locals Love

Amsterdam is a city of contradictions — one of Europe’s most liberal and liveable places, also one of its most overcrowded tourist destinations. Getting it right means looking past the stag parties and cheese shops of Damrak.

Cycling

Cycling isn’t just transport in Amsterdam — it’s culture. Hire a bike from a local shop (avoid the tourist rental places near Centraal Station) and ride the streets like a local. Rules: don’t stop suddenly, use the bike lanes, and yield to trams. The Jordaan neighbourhood and the Vondelpark are perfect cycling territory.

Neighbourhoods Worth Knowing

Jordaan is the most beautiful — 17th-century canal houses, independent boutiques, and the famous Saturday Noordermarkt. De Pijp is diverse, lively, and home to the Albert Cuypmarkt (Amsterdam’s biggest outdoor market). Noord (across the IJ, reachable by free ferry) is Amsterdam’s hipster frontier — warehouses turned into creative hubs, great restaurants, and cheaper.

Coffee Shops

Amsterdam’s licensed coffee shops allow cannabis consumption (for those over 18 with valid ID). They’re perfectly legal but increasingly regulated — tourists have been restricted from some under a 2023 policy. Know current rules before visiting. The tourist-facing coffee shops around Leidseplein are the most commercial; local spots in Jordaan are more relaxed.

Dutch Food

Real Dutch food is undersold. Stroopwafels (fresh from a market stall, not a packet), bitterballen at a bruine kroeg (brown cafe), herring from a street cart, and rijsttafel (an Indonesian influenced feast) are the highlights. Foodhallen in Oud-West is a great food market for sampling.

Avoiding the Crowds

Book the Rijksmuseum and Anne Frank House well in advance — they sell out weeks ahead in summer. Visit museums on weekday mornings. The Keukenhof tulip gardens (seasonal) require early booking too.
