Athens Travel Guide: Acropolis, Food Markets & Underrated Neighbourhoods

Athens is having a moment — and rightfully so. Long dismissed as just a gateway to the islands, the city has emerged as one of Europe’s most exciting urban destinations in its own right.

The Acropolis (and How to Do It Right)

The Acropolis is non-negotiable, but go early — gates open at 8am and the light is beautiful before the tour groups arrive. The combined ticket includes the Agora, Kerameikos, and several other sites, making it exceptional value. The Acropolis Museum at the base is world-class and often less crowded than the hill itself.

Food Markets & Eating Like a Local

Varvakios Agora (the Central Market) is a sensory overload in the best way — meat, fish, olives, and herbs sold in a building that hasn’t changed much in a century. For eating, skip Monastiraki Square and head to Exarcheia or Metaxourgeio for tavernas that serve locals. Souvlaki from a street kiosk remains one of the great cheap meals in Europe.

Underrated Neighbourhoods

Exarcheia is Athens’ bohemian heart — anarchist murals, independent bookshops, and brilliant mezze bars. Koukaki just south of the Acropolis is gentrifying thoughtfully and has excellent coffee spots and low-key restaurants. Pangrati is where Athenians actually live — farmers’ market on Fridays, neighbourhood cafes, zero tourists.

Day Trips

Cape Sounion (the Temple of Poseidon) makes a superb half-day. Delphi is a full day but genuinely awe-inspiring. For a quicker island fix, Aegina is reachable in under an hour by ferry.
