Cape Verde Travel Guide: Which Island to Visit & What to Expect
Cape Verde is Africa's most underrated island destination. Find out which island suits you, what to expect, and how to get the most out of this Atlantic archipelago.
Cape Verde Travel Guide: Which Island to Visit & What to Expect
Cape Verde (officially Cabo Verde) is an archipelago of ten islands off the west coast of Africa, and one of the Atlantic’s most underrated destinations. Each island has its own personality — choosing the right one makes all the difference.
Sal & Boa Vista: Beach Holidays
These two flat, sandy islands are where most package tourists go — long white beaches, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and all-inclusive resorts. If you want a classic beach holiday with easy connections, either works. Sal has slightly more town life (Santa Maria) and a better independent traveller scene.
São Vicente: Culture & Music
Mindelo on São Vicente is Cape Verde’s cultural capital — the birthplace of the morna music tradition (think Cesaria Evora), colourful colonial architecture, a vibrant carnival, and excellent restaurants. It feels more Cape Verdean and less like a resort.
Santo Antão: Hiking & Dramatic Landscapes
Just a short ferry from São Vicente, Santo Antão is one of Africa’s great hiking destinations. Deep green valleys, dramatic volcanic peaks, and agricultural terraces unlike anywhere else in the Atlantic. It’s challenging and rewarding.
Santiago: History & Authentic Life
The largest island and home to the capital Praia, Santiago has the most authentic urban Cape Verde experience, UNESCO-listed Cidade Velha (the oldest European colonial city in the tropics), and a rawness that the resort islands lack.
Getting Around
Inter-island flights with TACV are the main option for longer distances. Ferries connect the northern islands. Roads on the mountainous islands can be challenging — hire a local guide or experienced driver.
Community Tips
The Cape Verde communities on Parada have advice from travellers comparing the islands first-hand — ferry reliability, best local restaurants, and which resorts are worth the money.
