Dubai Travel Tips: What Nobody Tells You Before Your First Visit

Dubai is one of the most visited cities on earth, and yet first-timers are often caught off guard. Here’s what the brochures leave out.

Laws & Rules That Matter

Dubai is part of the UAE and operates under a legal system quite different from most Western countries. Public displays of affection are illegal (though widely tolerated in tourist areas). Alcohol is legal but only in licensed venues. Drugs carry severe penalties — including for traces in your system from before arrival in some cases. Criticising the government or royal family online can lead to arrest.

Dress Code

You don't need to cover up on the street, but dressing modestly (shoulders and knees covered) is expected in malls, markets, and religious sites. Swimwear belongs at the beach and pool. Women are not required to wear a headscarf.

Costs

Dubai is expensive by regional standards, but you can travel it affordably if you avoid tourist traps. The metro is excellent and cheap. Shawarma from a Filipino or Pakistani-run spot will cost under $3. Fine dining and beach clubs are where costs explode.

Beyond the Skyscrapers

Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood gives you a sense of old Dubai that most tourists miss entirely. The Dubai Creek abra (wooden ferry) ride costs pennies and is far more memorable than the Dubai Eye. Deira's Gold and Spice Souks are chaotic and brilliant.

Best Time to Visit

November to March is ideal — warm without being brutal. Summer (June–August) sees temperatures exceeding 45°C; outdoor activities are essentially off the table.
