Ho Chi Minh City Travel Guide: Reunification Palace, Street Food & Day Trips

Ho Chi Minh City (still called Saigon by most locals) is Vietnam’s engine room — chaotic, energetic, extraordinarily delicious, and one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic urban experiences.

The War Remnants Museum

The War Remnants Museum is one of the world’s most powerful and difficult museums — a comprehensive and deeply affecting account of the American-Vietnam War from the Vietnamese perspective. It’s not comfortable viewing, but it’s essential for understanding the country you’re visiting.

Reunification Palace

The Reunification Palace (Independence Palace) is where the fall of Saigon played out in 1975. It’s preserved almost exactly as it was — the conference rooms, the war room, and the rooftop helipad are all accessible. Simultaneously kitschy and haunting.

Street Food

HCMC’s street food is exceptional. Bánh mì here tends to be richer and more complex than in Hanoi. Hũ tiếu (a Southern noodle soup) is the local breakfast staple. The Ben Thanh Market area has tourist-facing food; the real action is in District 4 and District 1’s back streets — look for plastic stools and paper napkins.

Neighbourhoods

District 1 is the tourist and business hub. District 3 is quieter, more residential, and better for local cafes. District 4 is excellent for food. Bui Vien Walking Street (District 1) is the backpacker strip — lively but not the real city.

Day Trips

Cu Chi Tunnels (60km northwest) — the extraordinary underground tunnel network used by Viet Cong forces during the war. Mỹ Tho and the Mekong Delta make an excellent day or overnight trip.
