Kyoto is Japan's cultural soul — a city of 1,600 temples, traditional tea houses, and neighbourhoods that still feel like another century. It's also one of Asia's most visited cities, so timing and strategy matter.

When to Visit

Cherry blossom season (late March to early April) is magical but intensely crowded and expensive. Book accommodation months in advance. Autumn foliage (mid-November) is equally beautiful and slightly less manic. For a calmer experience, consider May to June or September to October — warm, manageable crowds, and lush greenery.

The Essential Temples

Fushimi Inari Taisha — the thousand torii gates — is best at dawn before tour groups arrive. Hike all the way to the top for solitude and city views. Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) is unmissable despite the crowds. Ryoan-ji's rock garden rewards a slow, quiet visit. Arashiyama's bamboo grove is a 10-minute experience max — but the surrounding area (Tenryu-ji temple, the monkey park) is worth a half day.

Gion & the Geisha District

Gion is best explored on foot in the early evening. You might spot a geiko or maiko heading to an appointment — please don't chase or grab them for photos. The streets of Hanamikoji and Shirakawa-minami are beautiful at any time of day.

Eating in Kyoto

Kyoto cuisine is subtle and refined — tofu-heavy, seasonal, and elegant. Nishiki Market ("Kyoto's Kitchen") is a covered street market perfect for snacking. For kaiseki dining, book ahead — it's expensive but a bucket-list experience.

Getting Around

Buses and the subway cover most sights. A Kyoto City Bus One-Day Pass is great value. For Arashiyama and the outer temples, cycling is a joy.
