Nepal Trekking Guide: Everest Base Camp vs Annapurna Circuit — Which Should You Do?

Nepal is one of the world’s great trekking destinations, and the two most famous routes — Everest Base Camp (EBC) and the Annapurna Circuit — attract thousands of trekkers each year. Both are extraordinary; they offer very different experiences.

Everest Base Camp (EBC)

The EBC trek is more of a cultural and altitude experience than a scenery one — the landscape is dramatic but relatively singular. The draw is the history, the Sherpa culture, Namche Bazaar, and arriving at the foot of the world’s highest mountain. It’s well-serviced and heavily trafficked. Altitude sickness is a real risk — acclimatisation days are essential.

Annapurna Circuit

Distance: ~160–230km (depending on route taken) Duration: 15–21 days Max altitude: 5,416m (Thorong La Pass)

The Circuit offers more variety — subtropical valleys, alpine meadows, high-altitude desert, and the dramatic Thorong La crossing. The Mustang region and the town of Manang are highlights. The circuit has been shortened by road building in some sections; purists now take side trails to avoid the road.

Which Is Right for You?

Choose EBC if: you want the iconic Everest experience, you’re comfortable with crowds, and you want excellent teahouse infrastructure.

Choose Annapurna if: you want more variety in landscape and culture, you prefer a more circular route, and you want slightly fewer trekkers (though the Annapurna Sanctuary and Poon Hill detours are busy).

Practical Tips

Both require a TIMS card and national park permits. Teahouse accommodation is reliable on both routes. Porter hire is recommended and supports local economies. The best seasons are October–November and March–May.
