Phuket Travel Guide: Best Beaches, Avoiding the Tourist Traps & Island Hopping Tips

Phuket is Thailand's largest island and one of Southeast Asia's most visited destinations. It has everything from party beaches to pristine snorkelling spots — the key is knowing which parts to visit and which to avoid.

The Beaches: Which One is Right for You?

Patong is the most famous — and the most chaotic. Loud, commercial, full of bars and jet skis. Good if you want nightlife and don't mind crowds. Not great for a peaceful beach day.

Kata and Karon – More relaxed than Patong, still busy but nicer atmosphere. Good surf in October–November.

Surin and Bang Tao – The west coast's most upmarket beaches. Long, beautiful, much calmer. Bang Tao has a mix of luxury resorts and local fishing village vibes.

Nai Harn (south) – One of the best beaches on the island. Less developed, popular with expats and those in the know. Stunning bay, good swimming.

Rawai – Not actually great for swimming (rocky and shallow) but a lovely local village atmosphere with excellent seafood restaurants on the waterfront.

Kamala – Quieter mid-west coast beach, good for families. Less busy than Kata and Karon.

Tourist Traps to Avoid

• Tuk-tuk scams: Fixed-price tuk-tuks from the airport or city are overpriced. Use Grab instead
• Gem scams: Strangers offering to take you to a "special" gem shop — always a scam
• Overpriced beach chairs: Technically all Thai beaches are public but vendors can be aggressive. Walk to the edge of clusters for cheaper rates
• Tiger temples / animal shows: Avoid any attraction that involves posed photos with tigers or performing animals

Island Hopping from Phuket

Phuket is a great base for day trips and overnight island visits:

• Phi Phi Islands – 2 hours by speedboat; stunning limestone karsts, famously beautiful but very crowded. Maya Bay now has visitor restrictions to protect the reef
• Similan Islands – Some of the best diving and snorkelling in Thailand; day trips available, liveaboards for serious divers. Best October–April
• James Bond Island (Phang Nga Bay) – The iconic limestone rock from The Man with the Golden Gun. Beautiful bay even with the crowds
• Koh Yao Noi – Small, quiet island just 30 minutes by longtail; worlds away from Phuket's tourism. Bicycles, rice paddies, great food

Getting Around

Phuket is not walkable between beaches — distances are big and the heat is intense. Grab (ride app) is the easiest and most honest way to get around. Renting a scooter is common but crashes are frequent — wear a helmet and assess your ability honestly.

The Songthaew (shared minivan) runs from Phuket Town to the beaches cheaply. Taxis from the airport are expensive — book a private transfer or use Grab.

When to Go

Peak season: November to April — dry, sunny, calm seas for snorkelling and diving. Shoulder: May and October — good deals, warm, some rain. Low season: June to September — west coast waves can be rough (strong undertow at some beaches), but east coast and islands are often fine. Prices drop significantly.
