Prague Travel Guide: Gothic Architecture, Beer Culture & Budget Tips

Prague remains one of Europe’s most stunning cities — a near-perfectly preserved medieval core, extraordinary Gothic and Baroque architecture, and the world’s highest per-capita beer consumption. It’s also navigating the tension between its incredible heritage and tourism overload.

The Old Town & Castle

Prague Old Town (Staré Město) is where most tourists spend their time. The Astronomical Clock on Old Town Square draws crowds every hour — worth seeing, but the clock itself is more impressive than the hourly show. Prague Castle is the world’s largest castle complex — arrive at opening to beat the hordes. The view from Petřín Hill is spectacular and surprisingly uncrowded.

Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge is magnificent — lined with Baroque statues and spanning the Vltava. At 6am it’s peaceful and atmospheric. By 10am it’s a photo scrum. Plan accordingly.

Beer Culture

Czech beer culture is not a gimmick — it’s genuine and historic. Pilsner Urquell (from Plzeň) and Kozel are the famous lagers, but Prague’s craft beer scene has grown significantly. Lokál (multiple locations) is the gold standard for tank-fresh Pilsner in a traditional setting. Avoid the tourist bars directly on Old Town Square charging €8 a pint.

Beyond the Old Town

Vinohrady and Žižkov are the neighbourhoods where Praguers actually live — excellent local restaurants, wine bars, and cafes without the tourist markup. The Václavské Náměstí (Wenceslas Square) area is central and practical, if a bit rough around the edges.

Budget Tips

Prague is cheaper than Western Europe but prices have risen significantly. Street food (trdelník, svíčková) from non-tourist stalls is the cheapest eating. Public transport is excellent and cheap. The Prague Card covering major sights can offer value if you plan to visit several museums.
