Queenstown is spectacular — a compact resort town surrounded by the Remarkables mountain range, set on the edge of crystal-clear Lake Wakatipu. It’s also one of the most expensive places in New Zealand. Here’s how to make the most of it.

The Adventure Activities

Queenstown invented commercial bungee jumping (AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge is the original, and still worth it). Skydiving, whitewater rafting, paragliding, and jet boating are all here. Prices have risen sharply — book in advance online for discounts and check if combining activities gives better rates.

Free & Cheap Options

Not everything in Queenstown needs to cost a fortune. The Queenstown Hill Time Walk is a free 2-hour hike with panoramic views over the lake and town. The Lake Wakatipu waterfront is spectacular at no cost. Fergburger (the famous burger institution) has a long queue for good reason and is affordable. The Queenstown Gardens peninsula is a peaceful free walk.

Day Trips

Glenorchy (45 minutes north) is Lord of the Rings country — braided rivers, dramatic peaks, and almost no tourists compared to Queenstown itself. Wanaka (an hour away) is smaller, quieter, and arguably more beautiful. The Gibbston Valley wine region is just 20 minutes away and produces outstanding Pinot Noir.

Hidden Hike: Ben Lomond

Ben Lomond Track is an all-day hike (6–8 hours return) that rewards with one of South Island’s best panoramas. Start from the Gondola station (save money by hiking up rather than taking the gondola). The summit at 1,748m is genuinely challenging.

When to Visit

Summer (December–February) is peak season — warmest but most crowded. Winter (June–August) draws skiers and has a buzzy aprés ski atmosphere. Shoulder seasons offer better prices.
