Seoul Travel Guide: K-food, Street Markets, Palaces & the Best Neighbourhoods

Seoul is extraordinary — a megacity of 10 million that manages to blend 600-year-old palaces with futuristic architecture, world-class food, and one of the world’s most vibrant youth cultures. It’s also deeply misunderstood by those who only know it through K-pop.

Food: The Main Event

Korean food is phenomenal and central to Seoul life. Korean BBQ (samgyeopsal and bulgogi) is the social experience; find a local spot in Mapo-gu rather than the tourist areas of Myeongdong. Bibimbap, sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), and mul naengmyeon (cold noodles) are essential. The Gwangjang Market is one of Asia’s great street food markets — bindaetteok (mung bean pancakes) eaten at a market stall is a Seoul ritual.

Palaces

Gyeongbokgung is the most impressive palace — arrived at dawn before the tourist rush. Changdeokgung and its Secret Garden are beautiful. Deoksugung is smaller but has a pleasant walking path and the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony.

Neighbourhoods

Insadong — traditional teahouses, art galleries, and antiques. Hongdae — university area with clubs, street performances, and indie music. Itaewon — the multicultural district, international food, LGBTQ+-friendly bars. Ikseon-dong — a beautifully preserved hanok (traditional house) village turned into artisan cafes. Bukchon Hanok Village is photogenic but has become very crowded; visit early morning.

Getting Around

Seoul’s metro is one of the world’s best — clean, punctual, cheap, and with English signage everywhere. The T-money card works on all public transport. Walking and cycling are also excellent options along the restored Cheonggyecheon stream.
