Seville Travel Guide: Tapas, Flamenco, Alcazar & The Best Barrios to Explore

Seville is one of Spain’s most passionate cities — the home of flamenco, bullfighting, and a tapas culture so deeply embedded that many bars still give away a free tapa with every drink. It’s spectacular, and more manageable for visitors than Madrid or Barcelona.

The Alcazar

The Real Alcázar is one of Europe’s most beautiful buildings — a Moorish palace complex still used by the Spanish royal family, with extraordinary tilework, ornate halls, and gardens. Book tickets in advance, and visit early morning. It was famously used as a filming location for Game of Thrones.

The Cathedral & La Giralda

Seville’s Cathedral is the world’s largest Gothic cathedral. Climb the Giralda tower (originally a Moorish minaret) for views over the old city. The ramp — built for horses — is a gentler climb than stairs.

Tapas Culture

Seville’s tapas culture is exceptional and, in many bars, still free or very cheap with a drink. The Triana neighbourhood (across the Guadalquivir river) is the most authentic area for tapas — locals go there specifically to eat. Alameda de Hércules is lively and bohemian.

Flamenco

Seville is the home of flamenco. For an authentic experience, look for intimate penas flamencas (flamenco clubs) rather than the large tourist shows. Ask at your accommodation for recommendations.

When to Visit

April’s Feria de Abril and Semana Santa (Holy Week, before Easter) are extraordinary cultural events but make the city incredibly busy and expensive. The best months to visit are March, October, and November. Summer (July–August) sees temperatures above 40°C — genuinely uncomfortable.
