Sri Lanka Travel Guide: Beaches, Tea Country & Ancient Temples for First-Timers

By Parada Editorial1 min read

A first-time guide to Sri Lanka covering beach towns, tea country train rides, ancient temples, and tips for building a relaxed, doable itinerary.

Sri Lanka packs an unusual amount of variety into a small island: palm-lined beaches in the south, misty tea plantations in the central highlands, and centuries-old temples scattered throughout. First-timers often try to see all three in one loop, which is doable but tight — give yourself at least ten days if you can.

The train ride from Kandy to Ella through the tea country is the trip's most photographed stretch, but it gets packed in high season. Reserve seats in advance through the official booking site, or ride third class standing near the doors for similar views without the wait.

Down south, Mirissa and Weligama are good bases for surfing and whale watching, while Galle Fort is worth a slow half-day just wandering the ramparts. Inland, Sigiriya and Dambulla cover the ancient temple side of things — go early to beat both the heat and the crowds climbing the rock fortress.

Budget travelers can get by on tuk-tuks and local buses, though hiring a driver for a few days is inexpensive and removes a lot of the logistics headache between regions. Whatever pace you choose, Sri Lanka tends to reward travelers who leave room in the itinerary rather than booking every day solid.
