Three Days Crossing the Salar de Uyuni: What a Jeep Tour Across Bolivia's Salt Flats Actually Involves

Booking a Salar de Uyuni tour from a poster in a hostel lobby is easy; knowing what the three days actually involve is harder. Most tours leave from Uyuni town or cross from San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, packing six people into a Land Cruiser with a driver-cook-guide for the whole stretch.

Day one is mostly the salt flat itself: driving across a white horizon with no real reference points, a stop at a cactus-covered island in the middle of it, and the obligatory perspective photos that look better in person than they sound. Day two moves into red and green lagoons dotted with flamingos, geysers that smell strongly of sulfur, and increasingly rough dirt roads.

The second night is the part nobody's poster mentions: basic refugios near 4,000 meters altitude, no heating, and temperatures well below freezing. Pack layers you'd use for winter camping, not a beach trip, and expect a mild headache if you haven't acclimatized in La Paz or Uyuni beforehand.

Tour quality varies enormously between operators running the identical route, mostly in vehicle maintenance and food. Asking other travelers which company they used, rather than booking the cheapest option in town, tends to matter more here than almost anywhere else.
